Little Puffs
(6-8 Years Old)
Less than 95 lbs
Introduces children to sailing with a focus on fun on the water in a safe environment, while also learning the basics of how sailboats operate. Boats are provided.

Beginner Opti
(8-13 Years Old)
Less than 95 lbs
Beginner Opti is the next step from Little Puffs, or the entry for first time sailors. The class teaches the basics of sailing (points of sail, trim, steering) and gets sailors comfortable with single-handed sailing. Learning and fun on the water are the focus. Sailors are encouraged to provide their own boat. Limited charter boats are available.
 
Sailors who weigh more than 95 lbs are advised to consider signing up for Beginner Sloops.

Intermediate Opti
(8-15 Years Old)
Less than 95 lbs
Intermediate Opti builds on the skills learned in Beginner Opti. Intermediate sailors who have one or more years prior experience and are ready for more advanced techniques, including an introduction to racing. Sailors must provide their own boat.
 
Sailors aged 12 and up who weigh more than 95 lbs are advised to consider signing up for Intermediate Sloops.

Beginner Sloops
(12-17 Years Old)
More than 95 lbs
This class is perfect if you have never sailed before, but have outgrown the Opti Dinghy. The class teaches the basics of sailing (points of sail, trim, steering) and gets sailors comfortable with a two-person boat. Boats are provided.

Intermediate Sloops
(12-17 Years Old)
More than 95 lbs
This class is perfect for sailors that have completed either Intermediate Opti or Beginner Sloops. Sailors are introduced to sailing with a partner. Intermediate and advanced boat handling will be taught through a mixture of on-the-water games and racing. Sail trim of jibs and spinnakers will be introduced. Boats are provided.
 
Sailors that are registered for PM Opti Racing may consider registering for Intermediate Sloops.

Reachers Adventure Sailing
(12-17 Years Old)
More than 95 lbs
This class is perfect for sailors that prefer the recreational and social aspects of sailing. Sailors will improve their boat handling through on-the-water games, distance sails and will introduce spinnaker flying and trapezing. Boats are provided.

Opti Racing
(8-15 Years Old)
Less than 95 lbs
Opti Racing is for sailors who love the sport and want to focus on racing skills. The class is appropriate for sailors who have completed Intermediate Opti and wish to focus on racing and competing at JSA events. Sailor provides their own boat.
 
Sailors weighing more than 95 lbs may consider registering for Intermediate Sloops in the morning.

Laser Racing
(12-17 Years Old)
At least 110 lbs
Like the Optimist for younger kids, the Laser is the worldwide standard for single-handed racing for both teens and adults. The Laser Racing Program is for intermediate to advanced sailors that want to race Lasers competitively in JSA events and beyond. Sailor provides their own boat.

420 Racing
(12-18 Years Old)
At least 110 lbs
The Club 420 is a high-performance race boat. The Club 420 Racing Program is for intermediate and advanced sailors who want to improve their racing skills, including spinnaker and trapeze work. Club 420 Racing sailors will also compete in JSA events.  Sailors are encouraged to provide their own boat. Limited charter boats are available.

Big Boat Sailing
(12-17 Years Old)
SYC members provide boats for use and act as mentors for young sailors. Practice takes places twice a week and sailors will participate in the Tuesday Breakwater Series as well as Thursday Ideal 18 Fleet Racing to learn race committee responsibilities. Sailors will compete in Junior Safety at Sea, JSA Navigation & Seamanship Competition, Beach Point Overnight and Dorade Trophy.
